Communications Center (Dispatch)
The Radio Communications Center (Dispatch) of the Bedford Police Department is an integral part of the department. The Communications Center is required to be staffed 24/7. It is the central point where inter-departmental calls are screened and transferred as well as answering calls and dispatching police, fire, ambulance, and wrecker personnel, notifying additional personnel and citizens, when necessary, also taking calls for other governmental agencies after hours, weekends, and holidays including, but not limited to, sewer, water, and animal control. All telecommunication officers are familiar with the municipal area and a general knowledge of city ordinances, state and federal law, and handling reports from the general public. More than 50,700 calls were received and transmitted on four administrative and three 911 lines in 2012. Included in this total were more than 3,900 calls to 911.
